Dan Ingram's Final WABC Show May 1982

This was the end of an era in New York City Radio.

This is an unscoped 3 CD aircheck of the final Dan Ingram Show on WABC from May 7, 1982. All during the four hours Dan plays songs and other pieces of the past from all the WABC years, tells a whole lot of stories, gets visits from well wishers and except for the final couple of moments leads one big on air party.

Dan was under the belief that later that summer he would wind up on what was planned to be a satellite delivered syndicated version of WABC what was to have been known as Super Radio. Unfortunately that never came to pass and it would be a couple of years before Dan would return to a daily radio show on 92 WKTU near the end of their run as a Top 40 station.

Just a couple of notes about this item. Most of the newscasts and traffic reports are scoped out. There was also a dead spot on the tape that served as the source for this CD set. The 5:30 to 5:50 p.m. segment has also been left out due to it's poor sound quality. Otherwise this CD set captures the feelings and sounds of that afternoon.

This is your chance to catch a copy of how it all came to an end for Dan Ingram on WABC after almost 21 years.

WABC Switch To Talk With Dan Ingram and Ron Lundy May 1982

This is a 3 CD set of what most call one of the saddest days in NYC radio history.

It was May 10, 1982 when Dan Ingram and Ron Lundy hosted what was going to be the final music show on WABC from 9 until Noon leading up to the format change to talk radio at Noon. This item presents Ingram and Lundy reviewing the music and history of WABC year by year. They tell some stories, talk about some of the DJ's, play a few historical clips (including Brief Showers) and more. They wrap it up with a montage of the hits that feature some of the classic WABC jingles.

This item also features the first half hour of Talk Radio 77 WABC with host Art Athens detailing what was to come and talk with his first guests...Dan Ingram and Ron Lundy.

Although it's a sad time for radio fans, this is one of the most important moments of NYC radio history that can be yours.

Cousin Brucie WABC September 1968

Here's an unscoped hour of Cousin Brucie that gives you a full idea of what WABC sounded like in their prime. This is a 9 p.m. hour with one of the more unique mixes of music. Some of the artists include Tiny Tim, Steppenwolf, The Doors, Ray Stevens, Jose Feliciano Jeannie C. Riley and of course The Beatles.

You'll also hear some of the classic commercials, WABC contests and more.

This CD also comes with a Bonus Track featuring Cousin Brucie's Go-Go Theme sung by Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons. This is a clean and complete cut with no talkover.

If you miss this kind of radio this is a fun CD to slip into your car's player, drive around and turn back the clock for a bit!

Cousin Brucie WABC 1965

Alan Freed WINS 1955/WABC 1959

This is a great example of Alan Freed who brought Rock & Roll to radio.

The first cut brings you the man when he was on top of the world. This is a 58 minute unscoped example of Alan Freed on WINS in March of 1955 after Freed had been in NYC for six months. He talks up the music, bangs on the console in time with the music and does what he did best...promote Rock & Roll, his upcoming show at The Paramount Theater and the record labels. Among the many interesting points is Freed playing BB King's new record and Stan Z. Burns serving as Freed's announcer. Burns survived the switch to news by WINS ten years later.

The second cut lasts just under 17 minutes and features Freed shortly before the payola scandal blew up in his face and took him out. You'll hear how Alan sounded on WABC in 1959. During the bulk of the day, WABC was easy listening but at night it was Rock & Roll time with Alan Freed.

You will notice that it's a very different Alan Freed at a very different sounding WABC.

This is one of the most valuable audio documents of what radio was to Rock & Roll at the start and what Alan Freed did to make it all come together.

Roby Yonge and Paul Is Dead WABC October 1969

Here is the classic overnight when Roby Yonge announced that Paul McCartney was dead...or so he thought.

Roby picked up on the ponderings of some college kids and a few others who were finding clues in Beatle album covers and music that made them believe that Paul was dead. Since Roby was on during the overnight, WABC's signal was heard in more than thirty states as Roby presented what he thought was the proof of all of this. He also told his listeners that he wasn't going to be with WABC in a couple of weeks because his contract wasn't renewed.

The end for Roby came a lot sooner than he thought it would.

This scoped aircheck picks things up at around twenty minutes before 1 a.m. when Roby was just getting rolling with this. It concludes with DJ Les Marshack taking things over and pleading with the listeners to stop calling.

The legend goes that Program Director Rick Sklar was given a wake up call at 1 a.m., told of what was happening, showed up at the station and had security escort Roby out of the building.

It turned out that it was Roby's career that was dead...not Paul.

Martin Block WABC December 1960/WNEW-AM June 1940

Long before The WABC All Americans and the WMCA Good Guys there was Martin Block. He, along with Al Jarvis in Los Angeles, are recognized as radio's first DJ's. Martin's DJ career started by accident in a way. WNEW-AM was covering the 1935 trial of Bruno Hauptmann and asked Block to go into a studio with a stack of records to fill the time during court breaks. That was the start of The Make Believe Ballroom and an almost 20 year reign for Block at WNEW-AM.

While very little recorded material of Block at WNEW-AM can be found there is this one rare clip. This is a live jam session from June of 1940 on Martin's show. It features Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Gene Krupa, Count Basie, Coleman Hawkins and others. The talent all piled into one studio at one time shows the popularity and power Martin Block had.

Cut Time - 13:10

The second cut on this CD features Martin Block closing down the Make Believe Ballroom in 1960 on WABC. Block left WNEW-AM in 1954 to move to WABC. That later made for an odd on air mix in the late 1950's when WABC featured both Martin Block and Alan Freed.

This is an unscoped final quarter hour of The Make Believe Ballroom. Block shares some looks back at some of the superstars of music and shares a look forward as he says "Goodbye."

Dan Ingram WABC December 1972

This is an example of Dan Ingram at his best at a time when his ratings were at their strongest.

This unscoped aircheck from December 7, 1972 feature Dan having fun with the music and even some of the commercials. You'll hear the jingles you remember along the way.

At this point in his career, Dan had a 25 share rating in afternoons. As a comparison, today you're called a success with only a six share. Dan was huge and this is proof of why.

Dan Ingram WABC April 1973

Another unscoped example of the master at work. This CD features the first half hour and last 25 minutes of Dan Ingram from a Friday afternoon in April of 1973. Ingram's having fun and making fun of music, people, commercials and just about everything else. The commercial breaks are also unscoped and bring back more memories.

Dan Ingram 20th Anniversary On WABC July 1981

This is a 3 CD set featuring a celebration of the best DJ in NYC Radio History

July 3, 1981 marked Dan Ingram's 20th anniversary on WABC. A special commercial free four hour Dan Ingram show was done that day to celebrate. Ingram tells a lot of stories, plays a lot of memorable moments, talks with people including Ron Lundy, Cousin Brucie, Scott Muni and more.

This show featured many rare moments revisited including the 1965 NYC Blackout and the Brief Showers incident. You'll also hear Ingram as he sounded in his pre-WABC days on KBOX in Dallas as well as even before when he was in Hartford.

The whole celebration winds up with Dan's closing theme Tri-Fi Drums...without him talking over it.

This CD set has the newscasts and few songs that were played scoped so as to fit on the original 2 tapes where this CD set came from. There is a very slight background buzz (the curse of recording AM radio) in parts of this set but it in no way detracts from the fun you'll have with all of these memories with the Master.

Dan Ingram Q104.3 May 2005

This was most likely Dan Ingram's final appearance doing a music show on NYC radio. After Scott Muni passed away, Q 104.3 had different DJ's and celebrities come in to do the show at Noon Scottso had. One noon time in May 2005 brought the voice of Dan Ingram to Q 104.3. Actually it was an edited half hour from a Beatles special Dan did a year or so earlier. Nevertheless, as a stand alone element it was most likely Big Dan's final DJ performance.

Dan shares some stories on this aircheck back from the Beatlemania days and does what he always did best...have fun.

Cut Time - 28:00

This unscoped aircheck comes with two special features as extra cuts. You'll also get Dan's closing theme that he used all those years on WABC. This is just the music (Tri-Fi Drums by the Billy May Orchestra) without Dan talking over it. This is the original edit as created by Dan...NOT a reproduction as some others have tried to do. This came straight off the cart from WABC.

You'll also get a scoped aircheck of Big Dan on WABC in 1961 just months after he arrived there. The jingles are different, the reverb's not there yet but Ingram is still Ingram.

Break Up's And Blow Up's

Here's a short CD with some real tough to find classics.

This CD starts with an outtake from Casey Kasem during his American Top 40 hosting days. Casey is doing one of his long distance dedications concerning the death of a family pet. When he hears that the song that'll play before the segment is too uptempo he let's loose with a four letter word tantrum of monumental proportions. This is Casey Kasem as you've never heard him....and he wishes you never did. There are no bleeps on this cut so ask the kids to cover their ears!

Cut Time - 1:24

A real quickie from Rick Dees is next. Dees has a little fun with Casey's tantrum by doing his own long distance death dedication.

Cut Time - :19

Cut three is one of the few, if only times Dan Ingram broke up on the air. This is the Brief Shower incident. Dan was reading the weather which included the phrase "brief showers." Cousin Brucie, who had gone shopping before coming in, was in the studio. When Dan said "brief showers" Brucie reached into his bag and started throwing the underwear he had bought at Dan.

Cut Time - :44

Music Radio 88? No...It was just a joke that the guys at WCBS-FM played on the folks at WCBS-AM. This cut features a gag promo that Ron Lundy and Cousin Brucie recorded featuring the announcement of "Music Radio 88." Just kidding!

Cut Time - 1:05

The final cut features Long John Nebel. He was one of the pioneer radio talk show hosts whose show resembled Art Bell's show of today in many ways. Nebel worked at WOR, WNBC and finally WMCA. His later years were as a syndicated show until his death in 1978. Larry King picked up the overnight radio slot after Nebel's death.

This cut from WNBC in 1972 starts innocently enough as Nebel starts to do a live read commercial as his studio of guests sat in. What Long John didn't realize until he started the read that it was an ad for an adult film called It Happened In Hollywood. What was supposed to be a sixty second live read became a four and a half minute break up classic. Listen close to the start as Nebel stutters as he read aloud the first mention that this is an adult film.
