The Cycle Of Violence is a theory developed in the 1970's that presents the path a woman travels at the hand of her abuser. It's called a cycle because the process repeats itself. It doesn't happen in a regular time span. The precise path may differ. The destination is always the same.

The Cycle Of Violence contains three parts.

The Tension Building Period
The Abuser will...

  • act moody and critical
  • belittle you
  • isolate you
  • threaten
  • drink or do drugs
  • destroy your property

  • The Violent Incident
    The Abuser will...

  • beat you
  • attack you with a weapon
  • force you to have sex
  • keep you away from family and friends
  • imprison you
  • verbally abuse and humiliate you in private and public

  • The Respite Period
(Also known as The Honeymoon Period)
    The Abuser will...

  • beg for forgiveness
  • apologize
  • say he loves you
  • promise to get help
  • promise to do whatever it takes
  • buy you flowers and other presents
  • promise it will never happen again
